Rev. Fr J. B. Crasta

The laity are those who, through faith and Baptism, have said “yes” to God’s inviting call and have entered the House of the Lord as members Christ’s Mystical Body. Each member of the Church Jesus has personally called by name, inviting each through the Holy Spirit to live intentionally as His disciple.. “Lay people, too, sharing in the priestly, prophetical and kingly office of Christ, play their part in the mission of the whole people of God in the Church and in the world.” (Second Vatican Council 1965, Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity, # 2)

What is the role of a laity?

The laity are those who, through faith and Baptism, have said “yes” to God’s inviting call and have entered the House of the Lord as members Christ’s Mystical Body. Each member of the Church Jesus has personally called by name, inviting each through the Holy Spirit to live intentionally as His disciple.

What is the role of laity in the ministry?

Their role is to sanctify the created world by directing it to become more Christian in its structures and systems: “the laity, by their very vocation, seek the kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and by ordering them according to the plan of God”.

What is the Laity Commission? (Can. 208).

The Commission deals with the pastoral concerns of the bishops, the Church’s mission in the Indian society and serves both as a Think Tank and as an arm of the CCBI to execute its decisions.

The Vatican II document, Lumen Gentium (Chapter IV:33), which magnified the authority, identity and the mission of the church as well as the duty of the faithful, teaches: “The laity are called in a special way to make the Church present and operative in those places and circumstances where only through them can it become the salt of the earth.”

In the diocese of Mangalore the laity has taken an active participation in the churches’ pastoral administration. In all the parishes we have Pastoral participatory structures in the Parishes. We have Parish Pastoral Perished, Fiancé committees, and commissions in all the parishes of the diocese. Similar Pastoral participatory structures are found at the diocesan and deanery level. May the good shepherd guide all our lay leaders to render their services in their respective parishes.
